Our Story

It all began from a merciful heart.

In 1974, FCCGW was established in Washington D.C.  For the half century, many of our members have been making efforts to find better solutions to the conflicts in minority communities in Washington D.C metropolitan area.

1980—2000

1983
Korean Family Law Counseling Center was established, Board of Directors configured, the inauguration of the first chairperson Soon Young Lee

1985
Renamed as The Korean Family Relation and Legal Advice Clinic (located office at 4920 Piney Branch Road, NW, Washington DC 20011) after Opening Ceremony for counseling practice, Sook Ja Bang was appointed as executive director,
Started mental health counseling.
<Family Law Counseling Center> first issue on the Washington branch was published

1986      
Renamed to <The Korean Family Counseling & Research Center> registered in IRS as a nonprofit organization,
Accreted as a non-profit organization Washington D.C. Government, 
Received 1st grant from UMC

1993
The introduction of a foundation director system to revitalize the fundraising campaign

1996
Changed name to <Washington Family Counseling Center>  

2000   
Started after-School Mentoring at Poe Middle School and Liberty middle school in Fairfax County,    
Renamed to <The Korean American Family Counseling Center>,  
Received Community Service Award from Former Korea’s President Dae Joong Kim 

2001—2015

2006     
The first Happiness Plus Family Camp was held

2008   
Started the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) tutoring program

2009     
Started Couple's Seminar, and Youth Vision Conference  

2010      
Ahn's Foundation donated 330,000 shares of stock

2011       
Love & Care Suicide Prevention Center accredited

2012     
President's Volunteer Service Award given through P2P program to 22 students (Gold 6, Silver 5, Bronze 11)

2013      
Renamed as The Family Counseling Center of Greater Washington (FCCGW)     
Awarded the President's Volunteer Award to volunteers Through P2P program: Total 28 students; Gold 22, Silver 3, Bronze 3

2014    
Started  FCCGW Summer Camp program, 
87 P2P Helper Students received a Service Award (39 in the US President's Volunteer Award) and 6 Community Service Outcomes for Supervisor Parents,       
Autumn Workshop (1) 'P.E.T: Parent with Effect Role Training' (2) Parents Growing with Their Children

2015     
Spring Workshop: Emotion Coaching for improvement of Academic  Efficiency,
Seminar for parents for Sex Education for Children is held twice in Vienna and Centreville,
Seminar for Emotion Coaching for Maryland Korean Community at Philippians Church for 4 weeks,
P2P Program; Youths and 4 Supervisor Parents were awarded the Presidential Service Award (56 total students - 15 gold, 14 silver, 27 bronze),     
Seminar for Children and Growing Parents was held in conjunction with the Fairfax County Public Schools & will be held (every spring/fall),
World History Camp and Computer Camp during Winter Break

2016—2019

2016       
Parent Education Seminar Self-Esteem Improvement at Centerville ES for 4 weeks,
More than 430 individuals participated in the P2P program and 44 students received the Presidential Service Award (26 gold, 11 silver, and 7 bronze),
Began weekly senior program and counseling at Yorkville Government cooperate Apt. in Fairfax,      
Group and Individual Art Therapy program was held for 8 months

2017    
Started counseling service once a week in Fulton, MD,
Internet and Sex Addiction seminar at White Oak ES, Burke, VA,
Depression, ADHD, and Sex education seminars for parents of youth conducted at Woodson HS, Fairfax,
As a part of Green Tree Learning Center program, Summer Camps 1 and 2 were held,   
Started mental health clinic and 15-minute free telephone  mental health consultation by Dr. Han,         
Seminars for Parents Growing with Children were held in conjunction with Fairfax County Public School at Centreville HS and Chantilly HS

2018      
Received $336,936 grant authorization from Fairfax County for FY2019-2020,      
FCCGW 44th Annual Fundraising Banquet,     
Participated in Adult Day Health Care and Tuberculosis Programs,
Summer Camp 1&2 at Mclean Korean Presbyterian Church,
P2P Program: 34 students were awarded the Presidential Service  Award (71 students and parents attended),          
Seminars for Parenting Education were held in collaboration with Fairfax County Public School at Centreville High School and Chantilly High School,        
Senior Outreach Program continues at the 4 senior centers

2019        
Seminar for Building Self-esteem was held at Garden Korean School, 
Senior outreach program starts at Eden Senior Care and Love Hand Home Health

Virtual Mental Health Seminar on stress, anxiety, depression under the COVID-19 pandemic,        
Virtual Summer Camp was held,       
Virtual Peer to Peer Program initiated and expanded nationwide,       
Parenting Seminar, 10/22—11/19 for 5 weeks.
